Mr Turner as Thesaurus Bait

An advantage of naming a character 'Turner' is that one expands one's vocabulary in the search for verbs other than 'to turn' or phrases other than 'turn in the road' or 'turn the corner' when that character is in the scene.

The disadvantage is that it adds several minutes of thought to the completion of a single sentence.

Cat Meets Dog

Author Brian Malloy always reminds students at the Loft that there are two parts of being a writer--the writing and the selling (or as he calls them "cat" and "dog").

As I finally peek out of the writing cave I share with my "cat," I don't feel scared of the "dog." "Dog" is a writer's best friend! And while the "cat" may do very well alone with just her talent, imagination and craft, you also need persistence and hard work to train the "dog" to roll over for you.

So I've tortured this metaphor long enough. Back to the page! Victoria Tirrel

But Wait...My Posts Are Brilliant!

In two days I head to Madison and my first attempts at pitching. I'm crafting a one-pager to leave behind and wondering whether to mention our humble gem of a blog (to which I have not contributed since...ummm...well, in a long time).

Should I list it? Does it show that I can blog brilliantly or does it show that I don't blog consistently? Both are true but, damn it, the first far outweighs the last. So, yes, I'm going to do it!

Agent dear, if you are looking here, instead please read October 27 and November 3 & 7 and December 2 and January 10 and February 21 and April 4 and May 16 and December 14 and January 15 and February 7 and November 29.

If you sell my two books, I'll blog my heart out. Victoria Tirrel
